Our story

Everything here begins with three German shepherds who came before the nonprofit: Elvis, Priscilla, and Kwan Lo. We call them our founding family. Losing them—especially Kwan Lo in June 2025—is what turned grief into a promise to help dogs still waiting for rescue.

Long before that promise became paperwork, dogs were already finding their way here—helping strays, bridging gaps for neighbors, and learning what it takes to heal a frightened animal. The next chapter was a dream of a sanctuary where the hardest cases could stay forever.

That changed with Howie (Rescue Me Tampa, July 2025).

His story also clarified something practical we had to face: a full sanctuary for many lifetime dogs was not financially sustainable. We chose a path that could help more dogs over time—keep three permanent residents who need lifelong stability, and care for additional dogs placed with us by partner rescues whenever we have room—while honoring the standard of care Howie received in his final days.

Today Bruce (German shepherd), Millie, and Molly (black Labs) are those permanent haven dogs—survivors of serious abuse who thrive with routine, patience, and veterinary support. Around them, a rotating group of dogs from organizations such as SWFLGSD Rescue, Homeward Bound Hounds, and The Animal Welfare League (The AWL) live here while those rescues manage adoption.

Dogs have found their way here since 2021—sometimes a neighbor in need, sometimes a dog others had given up on. In the past year, as Danny's Dog Haven turned fully toward rescue and partner placements, more than twenty dogs have moved through our home for medical care, decompression, and adoption through their listing rescues. We stay intentionally small so that number stays meaningful, not a volume metric. Cliff taught us the same lesson before he passed in August 2025.

How we work

  • Low capacity by design—quality of care over quantity of intakes
  • Veterinary care, nutrition, enrichment, and training tailored to each dog
  • Transparent communication with partner rescues and adopters
  • Gratitude for donors and volunteers who extend our reach

After adoption

Partner rescues handle adoption contracts and approvals. For dogs who were in our home while they waited for a family, post-adoption support is there if you want it—we may check in once in the first few days, but we will not push for ongoing updates. Some families stay in touch; others prefer quiet after go-home day, and that is fine. Whenever you do want help, questions about crate time, settling in, or what we saw in daily life are welcome.

When something urgent comes up—out-of-town travel, a stretch of long office days—adopters can ask whether we have room for short-term backup care at the haven. We do not charge a sitting fee; you provide the food your dog is already on. Availability depends on space and harmony with the dogs here, but offering that safety net is part of how we work: small numbers, real relationships, and families who do not have to figure everything out alone on day one.
