Permanent sanctuary dogs

Bruce, Millie, and Molly live with us for life. Past abuse and ongoing medical needs mean adoption is not the right path—they have stability, routine, and veterinary support here instead.

We keep three permanent residents by design so we can give abuse survivors the long-term care they need while still hosting dogs from partner rescues. See dogs available for adoption.

Bruce

Bruce, a German shepherd placed through The Animal Welfare League, came to us after years of severe neglect and abuse. Charlotte County Animal Control intervened to remove him from the home; his former owner was prosecuted for animal cruelty. When Bruce entered care he was critically underweight, had extensive hair loss, and his ears were badly damaged.

With support from Charlotte County Animal Control, The Animal Welfare League, and Dr. Ally's Animal Clinic in Punta Gorda, Bruce underwent total ear canal ablation (TECA) surgery—his ears could not be saved. He is nearly deaf but responds to very loud sounds; he stays closely attuned to his people and we communicate with hand signals every day.

Despite everything he endured, Bruce is an exceptionally kind, gentle dog. He loves quiet companionship and will rest beside you for hours, happy simply to be close. He is a permanent resident at the haven, where he will always have the safety and routine he deserves.

Millie

Millie and her sister Molly are black Labs who came to us through Homeward Bound Hounds after leaving a neglectful breeding situation. Millie arrived in the poorest condition of the two, with severe ear infections and significant skin disease.

Both girls were placed on intensive treatment for their ears and skin. We had been told neither was pregnant; as Molly's care continued, it became clear that assumption was wrong (see Molly's story). Millie needed time to stabilize, and she still does—she will likely remain on lifelong medical support for chronic skin and ear issues.

Millie is a permanent sanctuary dog at the haven. Our goal is steady health, patience, and the kind of daily love that helps her leave the worst of her past behind.

Molly

Molly came to us with her sister Millie from Homeward Bound Hounds after a neglectful breeding situation. She, too, suffered from serious skin problems and began intensive treatment alongside Millie.

Within a few weeks, our veterinarian confirmed Molly was pregnant. The medications she required posed a high risk of pregnancy loss, birth defects, or harm to her own recovery. After careful consideration with our veterinary team, we followed their recommendation to end the pregnancy so Molly could focus on healing—a difficult but compassionate decision made in her best interest.

Molly is a permanent haven dog. With Bruce and Millie, she has a stable home, ongoing dermatology care, and the quiet consistency she needed after a hard start. She is deeply loved here.
