Our dogs

These dogs are in our home through partner rescues while their listing organization finds adopters. Right now Penny, Mama Peaches, and Duke are with us. We also have three permanent sanctuary dogs who are not available for adoption.

These dogs are placed with Danny's Dog Haven by their listing rescue. We provide daily care while they are here; adoption is handled only by that rescue, not by us.

Penny

Terrier mix · The Animal Welfare League

Penny is an affectionate terrier mix who adores people and most dogs. She prefers gentle playmates and usually steps away when another dog wants rougher play. She loves quiet cuddle time and will soak up pets for as long as you offer them.

Like many dogs who arrived as strays, she is unsettled by fireworks and storms and will stay close to you when the weather turns. She enjoys toys without destroying them. She is housetrained and walks well on a leash. Penny is an exceptionally gentle companion. Her listing rescue, The Animal Welfare League, requires a fenced yard and at least one other dog in the adoptive home. While she has been with us, she and Mama Peaches have been especially good playmates—they are not bonded, but they share space easily and often nap side by side. If your household is open to two dogs, Peaches has been a compatible friend for Penny; each adoption is still handled by that dog’s listing rescue. She is approximately two and a half years old.

She is in our home for daily care and decompression while The AWL handles adoption inquiries.

Mama Peaches

Black mouth cur · Homeward Bound Hounds

Peaches is a sweet female Black Mouth Cur who gets along beautifully with other dogs. She matches their energy—happy to play rough or gently depending on her playmate. She arrived heartworm positive, completed full treatment, and her follow-up test in late September confirmed she is heartworm negative!

Peaches loves attention, belly rubs, and staying close to people or another dog. She has a gentle, devoted nature and is protective of her family while remaining friendly with other dogs. She walks well on a leash, is housetrained, and will entertain herself when no one is available to play. She is approximately two years old.

She is settling in with routine and patience while Homeward Bound Hounds manages her adoption path.

Duke

Mix · Homeward Bound Hounds

Duke came to us through Homeward Bound Hounds—a big, goofy one-year-old who quickly earned the nickname “Scooby Duke.” Before rescue, he spent roughly six months in a rural shelter and was on the euthanasia list when HBH pulled him. He arrived very underweight; he is gaining weight on a steady routine and his personality is showing more every day.

He is playful and energetic—basically a large puppy who loves attention when playtime winds down. He gets along well with other dogs and enjoys people; because of his energy, an active home and older children are a better fit than toddlers. He is approximately eleven months old and is unaltered; our veterinarian asked that he gain weight before surgery.

He lives here for daily care and decompression while Homeward Bound Hounds manages adoption. Original adoption listing (Facebook).

Gabby

German shepherd · SWFLGSD Rescue · Adopted September 17, 2026

Congratulations to Gabby and her new family—we were grateful to have her in our home while SWFLGSD Rescue found the right match.

Interested in adopting?

Please apply directly through the rescue that listed the dog (SWFLGSD Rescue, Homeward Bound Hounds, The Animal Welfare League (The AWL), or whichever group placed them with us). Only that rescue can approve an adoption—we provide daily care while the dog is here.

Support after go-home. For dogs who lived with us before adoption, help is there if you want it—we may check in once early on, but we will not harass you for updates. Reach out anytime with honest questions about settling in, routines, or behavior. If travel or a schedule crunch comes up, you can ask whether we have room for short-term backup care here—there is no sitting fee; you supply the food they are currently on. Space and the dogs currently in our home always come first, but many adopters tell us that knowing a familiar handler and home are an option that helped them finally say yes—especially when they are new to the area and do not yet have a backup plan.

Not sure which rescue to contact or how to reach them? Contact us and choose Adoption help (partner rescue) on the form—we are glad to help you connect with the right organization.

For general questions about a dog in our home, or to ask about a visit by appointment, use the contact form (topics Questions about a dog in our care or Request to meet a dog).
