Habitat & yard — mostly first-year setup
The Habitat & yard slice on the chart is not rent or homestead overhead. It is what it took to make a home-based haven workable when many dogs wore the lawn down to sand and tracked grit inside every day.
- Upfront (largest share): fencing sections, dog walkways, robot vacuums to keep up with sand and dirt (they are under warranty but need frequent repairs), muddy mats, and restoring grass—sectioning the yard ~60 days at a time until turf recovered.
- Still ahead: opening another large yard section (roughly $400–500 in fencing) so dogs can rotate without destroying new grass.
- Ongoing but smaller: spring/fall overseeding, fertilizer, yard treatments for bugs, and running waterers to dilute urine so grass can survive—nowhere near the first-year rebuild cost.
We expect food, veterinary care, and transport to dominate the mix over time as habitat setup tapers.
